# D-17 consultant: colour meaning, Arabic script and category check of the three looks
Runtime date: 2026-10-20. Role: consultant (ice-direction roles.md section 4). Advises only; picks no option and rewrites none.
Inputs: ice/BRIEF.md; ice/review/direction/D-17-options.md; ice/research/R-01, R-04, R-05, R-06 (all 2026-10-20); ice/plan/concepts.md; ice/plan/hooks.md; ice/assets/TRUTH.md; temp/fontmatch/ (cands.png, ref_en_wide.png, ref_ar_wide.png, match.html, font files); temp/ar_search_pill.png; assets/fonts/.
Measured this dispatch (proof files kept outside the project; this report is the only file written here): contrast (WCAG 2.2 formula, color.md section 8); colour-vision simulation (Machado 2009, full severity, distance in OKLab x100); font coverage, GPOS features and glyph bounds (fontTools on the project's own font files, Readex instanced at 600 and 700); a 1080x1920 proof per direction rendered in headless Chrome 149 with the placeholder at an alef height of 96 px (5 percent of frame height), texture words at 40 to 45 px, and the rebuilt pill.

## Question 1: colour meaning, rival claims, national readings, colour vision
**A Night shift.** Near-black plus colour that arrives on each lock reads as night, reward, and Spotify's own browse grid (inferred). Rival: horn red #E61E32 is 1 degree of hue and OKLab dE 4.2 from Apple Music's key red #FA233B (R-04 S-04), and it is the first lane colour to flood; red, white, near-black and green lanes lit together as horizontal bands carry all four pan-Arab flag colours (R-04 S-01). Colour vision: red vs olive (deutan dE 4.9) and play green vs coral (deutan dE 3.4) collapse; lanes keep their word and position cues, but lock state is coded by colour against grey.
**B Daylight print.** Warm paper with red reads as Spotify's own Wrapped 2025 season (R-06 S-04, S-10, S-11) and as daylight print, a break from the dark category (R-04 open spaces). Rival: magenta #DC148C is 23 degrees of hue from Anghami purple #92278F (R-04 S-03, S-07), and red next to magenta makes Apple's red-pink pair; red, black, white-ish and deep green again form the pan-Arab set. Colour vision: red vs deep green collapse for protans (dE 4.1); red vs magenta is close even for normal vision (dE 12.8); coral (1.71:1) and Spotify green (1.66:1) on #EFEFEA fail 3:1.
**C Signal.** Black, white and one green is Spotify at rest ("Spotify Green is our resting color", R-01 S-02) and the category's own convention (R-04); green reads as fertility or nature in the region (R-04 S-01) and no rival claims it in this category (R-04, inferred). No national reading found (no red). Colour vision: the thesis "only your choice is green" rests on #1ED760 against #A7A7A7 of almost the same lightness (OKLab L 0.77 vs 0.73, deutan dE 10.8), so colour is the only cue unless lightness or shape also changes.

## Question 2: Arabic face at phone size, pairing, the placeholder with its shadda
**A, IBM Plex Sans Arabic Bold and Regular with Figtree 700 and 500.** Naskh proportions (teeth to alef 0.49, CircularSp-Arab about 0.55 on ref_ar_wide.png) and the narrowest set (placeholder 1106 px wide at 5 percent height); shadda, hamza and "؟" render whole at 130 px and at 40 px. At equal visible height its body is 69 percent of Figtree's x-height and its stem 86 percent, and the family stops at Bold: Arabic looks smaller and lighter wherever both scripts share a frame (the Arabic version still carries the English RD-01 line) unless set about 1.2 to 1.4 times larger. Regular at 40 px in #A7A7A7 is the thinnest texture of the three.
**B, Tajawal ExtraBold and Bold with Bricolage Grotesque Bold.** Closest metric match (Arabic body 88 percent of Bricolage x-height, stem 98 percent) and the most legible texture at 45 px; shadda correct. But the voices differ (expressive ink-trapped Latin, plain geometric Arabic), proportions lean Kufi (teeth to alef 0.70, shape overlap 0.223, the lowest), it is the widest (1339 px, 124 percent of the 9:16 width), and its hhea ascent (643 units) sits below its hamza tops (851 to 878): any mask or canvas box built from the font ascent clips marks.
**C, Readex Pro 600 for both scripts.** One designed family: Arabic and Latin stems identical (0.142 em), Arabic body 87 percent of the Latin x-height, the most coherent pair; shadda correct. Arabic is lighter than Spotify's (ink ratio 0.72, D-17) with a 700 ceiling and geometric proportions (teeth to alef 0.62, overlap 0.260). Its line box (hhea 1000 / -250) is smaller than its Arabic ink (hamza top 1.019 em, yeh tail -0.499 em): a clip to the line box cuts the question's first letter and its tails.
**Best echo of CircularSp-Arab without imitation:** IBM Plex Sans Arabic (A): highest shape overlap (0.393), nearest proportion, closest to the Regular weight Spotify uses in its own Arabic search pill (temp/ar_search_pill.png), and an independent OFL design (Bold Monday, Khajag Apelian, Wael Morcos; R-05 S-05), so it echoes without copying. Its cost is weight (0.86 of Spotify's headline, capped at Bold).

## Question 3: what a Spotify brand designer would recognise or reject
**A.** Most likely recognised as Spotify: the app's own dark interface, green held to play and the field as Spotify does (R-04 S-02, third party), lane colours sampled from Spotify's own browse tiles. Questions a designer would raise: red leading (Apple), four lane hues against Wrapped 2025's "reduced color palette" (R-06 S-11), and the green logo must sit on #000000 or white, not #121212 (R-01 S-02).
**B.** Recognised as Spotify's brand-communications side (Wrapped 2025 cream, type-led, "analog and digital aesthetics", R-06 S-11); the black logo on cream is allowed (R-01 S-02) and is how Wrapped itself ends (R-06 S-02, S-10). Most likely rejected on the written rules if overprints mix two hues ("Don't introduce new colors outside our brand palette") or coral and green shapes stay near 1.7:1 ("Do choose colors with high contrast"), and a near-Wrapped look from an outsider can pass as an official campaign.
**C.** Recognised at once (green on black) and fully rule-safe, but a designer would likely reject it on voice: it is the "resting" product look, not the "much more colorful language in our brand communications" or "surprising color combinations" (R-01 S-02), and it reads as a tech demo (D-17's own risk line).

## Evidence
Known (sources, all accessed 2026-10-20):
- R-01 S-02 Spotify Design & Branding Guidelines: green logo only on black or white; black logo on light, white on dark; "Do get creative with surprising color combinations"; "Do choose colors with high contrast"; "Don't introduce new colors outside our brand palette"; green is the "resting color" within "a much more colorful language". R-01 S-08, S-09: Arabic on spotify.com is set in CircularSp-Arab; button green #1ED760, hero #121212. R-01 S-05: artists "shouldn't copy this identity".
- R-04 S-01 (evergreen, 2004): pan-Arab red, white, black, green carry national meanings; Egypt's red, white, black named. R-04 S-03, S-07: Anghami #92278F purple, blue to purple to pink gradient. R-04 S-04: Apple Music key colours #FA233B, #FA2D48, #FA586A, #D60017. R-04 S-05: YouTube Music theme #131313.
- R-05 S-01 (2026-04-28), S-02 (2026-09-03): Arabic must share x-height, contrast and colour with its Latin partner; a delicate Latin with a heavy Arabic "looks like two brands collided". R-05 S-05: OFL licences and designers.
- R-06 S-04, S-10, S-11 (2025-12-03): Wrapped 2025 cream ground, red numerals, reduced palette, texture, black icon on cream end frames (S-02).
- D-17 options measurements (temp/fontmatch/): shape overlap and ink ratios against Spotify Mix and CircularSp-Arab.
Measured here:
- Contrast on ground: A red 4.10, olive 4.14, coral 9.47, mint 13.78, green 9.76, muted 7.79; white on coral 1.98, mint 1.36, green 1.92, red 4.57, olive 4.52. B ink 16.24, muted 4.69, red 3.96, magenta 4.03, deep green 6.19, coral 1.71, green 1.66. C muted 7.79, green 9.76, grid 1.31 (decorative).
- Colour-vision pairs (normal / protan / deutan / tritan): A red vs olive 29.1 / 11.5 / 4.9 / 28.6; green vs coral 27.3 / 9.2 / 3.4 / 27.0; coral vs grey 14.2 / 7.7 / 12.2 / 14.1. B red vs deep green 33.6 / 4.1 / 19.5 / 37.2; red vs magenta 12.8 / 14.5 / 12.2 / 5.6; green vs coral as A. C green vs grey 21.6 / 15.8 / 10.8 / 14.7.
- Fonts: all three Arabic faces cover every code point of "أيّ محتوى على بالك؟", "كلاكس شنيور موتور" and "الشارع ماشي على مزيكتك" plus 0 to 9, with GPOS mark and mkmk; Figtree and Bricolage have no Arabic (Arabic runs must be set in the Arabic face). Placeholder width at 5 percent height: Plex 1106 px, Readex 1212 px, Tajawal 1339 px (all above 1080: two lines or a smaller size in 9:16); Chrome line box: Plex 1.50 em, Tajawal 1.476 em (win metrics), Readex 1.25 em (hhea).
- CircularSp-Arab proportion: pixel rows of ref_ar_wide.png (alef about 33 px, body about 18 px; plus or minus 2 px).
Inferred (no source): colour moods per look; that a lit lane grid can read as a flag; that magenta reads as Anghami to Egyptian viewers; YouTube's brand red #FF0000 (dE 5.2 to the horn red, general knowledge); red plus deep green on cream reading as a Christmas palette globally; what a Spotify designer would say.

## Risks per option
**A Night shift**
- High: horn red #E61E32 is visually Apple Music's red (dE 4.2) and is the first lane colour after the play press.
- Medium: pan-Arab flag reading when red, white and green or olive lanes light together on near-black.
- Medium: colour-vision collapse (red vs olive, green vs coral, coral vs grey for protans); lock state carried by colour.
- Medium: Plex Arabic lighter and smaller than Figtree in shared frames; no weight above Bold.
- Medium: green logo placed on #121212 instead of #000000 or white.
- Low: white words on coral, mint or green lanes fail (1.36 to 1.98:1); words on those lanes need #121212.
- Low: the full question at 5 percent height does not fit one 9:16 line.
**B Daylight print**
- High: Spotify green (1.66:1) and coral (1.71:1) on #EFEFEA fail 3:1 for shapes and words, against Spotify's own "high contrast" rule.
- High (if it happens): overprint or misregistration where two colour plates meet makes off-palette hues; misregistration on Arabic ink blurs dots and the shadda (ice-arabic hard rule 3).
- Medium: magenta near Anghami, red plus magenta near Apple, in the Arabic version especially.
- Medium: red vs deep green collapse for protans; red vs magenta close for everyone at small sizes.
- Medium: pan-Arab colour set present; low: Christmas palette reading globally.
- Medium: a near-Wrapped look from an outsider can imply an official campaign (implied endorsement is in must_avoid).
- Medium: Tajawal plain against expressive Bricolage; widest Arabic; hhea ascent below hamza tops (clip risk outside DOM).
- Low: Spotify's dark pill and play control on paper (their skin must stay dark, color.md section 5).
**C Signal**
- Medium: the "only your choice is green" cue is colour-only against a grey of the same lightness (deutan dE 10.8).
- Medium: category default and rule-safe but off-voice for Spotify brand communications.
- Medium: Readex line box smaller than its Arabic ink: masks cut to the line box clip the hamza of the first letter and the yeh and alef maksura tails.
- Low: Arabic lighter than Spotify's and least like CircularSp-Arab of the three.
- Low: green logo on #121212 (as A); the question at 5 percent height needs two lines.
No blocker found in any direction as written. Two conditions would become blockers if broken: the green logo only on #000000 or white, and no hue-on-hue overprint that creates a colour outside Spotify's palette.

## Only a native reader or the owner can confirm
- Whether a lit grid of red, white and green lanes on black reads as a flag (Egyptian, Palestinian or another) to viewers 18 to 34 (A, B). Evidence is one evergreen flag page; no audience source.
- Whether magenta or pink reads as Anghami in Egypt (B). Evidence is site code and a logo directory.
- Whether Plex Arabic reads as contemporary or as institutional to Egyptian viewers (it is common in corporate and government interfaces, inferred), and whether Tajawal reads as plain next to Bricolage.
- The exact placeholder string: TRUTH.md read it from rendered pixels; the capture shows a shadda on the yeh and no other vowel mark, a native reader confirms.
- Whether the owner counts web player browse-tile colours as Spotify's "brand palette" (Spotify prints no palette as text, R-01 open spaces).

## Confidence
Measurements: high (computed on the project's own hex values and font files; colour-vision values are a simulation, not tests with viewers). Cultural colour meaning: low to medium (one evergreen source, no audience research). Rival readings: medium (site code, R-04). Spotify designer reaction: low to medium (inferred from R-01 S-02 and Spotify's campaign descriptions; no designer consulted).
