Why these parts

The message is short, so the run kept almost all of it. It dropped the first 27.5 seconds of Thanksgiving greetings, because Al Jazeera's reels open on the news and the news here is the Alberta referendum a week away, so the reel starts on "This year, Thanksgiving is a bit different". Everything after that stays in Carney's own order, with no word cut inside a sentence; only a 0.35 second pause at 50.3 s is removed where the section card sits. The extra 9.6 seconds of the edit are cards with no speech: the section card at 22.75 s and the result card and end card after 87.65 s.

How it got here

The run as it happened, draft by draft, with every round of the owner's feedback. Told from the conversation in the case study.

  1. The prompt

    One message in Egyptian Arabic, relayed by a lead session: re-edit raw.mp4, Prime Minister Carney's Thanksgiving message, in the exact editing style of an Al Jazeera English reel (reference.mp4), with the raw's content and Al Jazeera's identity as it is; find and download the latest real official footage; decide everything, but show the preview before building.

  2. Brief and reading the reference

    The raw is 115 s of one speaker on two camera angles. The 193 s reference was measured, not copied: red-disc silhouettes with pop titles in the hook, a grunge section card, a teal relief map, bullets on a blurred speaker, datelines, quoted speakers' captions in pink, an end card. The stage 01 questions were waived by the user, so every open choice took its recommended option and was logged as a decision.

  3. Choosing the minutes

    Paper edit from the word transcript: the opening 27.5 s of Thanksgiving greetings is dropped, because Al Jazeera's reels open on the news and the news is the referendum a week away. Everything after it stays, in its own order, with no word cut inside a sentence: 86 s of the 115 s.

  4. Storyboard

    Every insert names its source in a footage ledger: official PMO uploads under CC BY, agency and CPAC footage of the rallies, a Natural Earth map, and the unofficial result from Elections Alberta (74.9% to remain).

  5. First preview

    Before any full build: a storyboard sheet of 20 style frames and a 27 s moving preview of the opening with sound, sent for approval.

  6. The owner's notes

    The owner rejected the code-made music and effects, and asked for silhouettes only for the people talked about, never for the speaker, a reason for every element on screen, and the reference's finishing (motion blur, film texture, vignette, glow, grade) measured, not guessed.

  7. Second preview: three tracks

    Three openings of 27.5 s, each with a different real library track from Pixabay ranked against the reference's separated music stem, recorded Mixkit effects one per on-screen action, and storyboard v3 with Carney always lit.

  8. Track 1

    The owner answered in two words: "تراك 1", Tension News by Sonican. The full build started.

  9. First full render

    The full 95.6 s picture rendered at 1080x1920, 2869 frames. The session then paused on a usage limit and resumed with drive C almost full, so heavy intermediates were deleted and every later render went to drive D.

  10. Checks on the first master

    Loudness -16.2 LUFS, every spec check green, but the end card sat still for 3.2 s (limit 3.0) and the per-cut strips showed a white CPAC "LIVE EVENT" slate from the source feed at 78 s. The crowd shot was moved 1.5 s earlier to skip the slate, Carney's pushes were made stronger, and the end card was given a slow drift and a fade.

  11. Final master and delivery

    Every gate green on the final file: spec, -16.2 LUFS and -1.4 dBTP, no frozen or empty frame, end hold 0 s, fast in-shot motion 12%. A cold viewer who saw only a contact sheet understood who spoke, about what, and that 74.9% voted to remain. Delivered with an upload copy under 30 MB, SRT captions, an EDL and the retimed transcript.
